Dr.
Rose recommends that children have an orthodontic
evaluation by the ages of 7 or 8, or whenever a parent
has an orthodontic concern. He will advise if orthodontic
treatment is required and the best time for treatment
to begin. The first permanent molars and upper and
lower incisors have usually erupted by age 7 or 8,
and crossbites, dental crowding or other developing
orthodontic problems can be evaluated. If treatment
is begun around 8 years of age, Dr. Rose
can treat the growth of the jaw and guide the erupting
permanent teeth towards their proper position. Early
treatment can also influence the width of the upper
and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent
teeth, possibly avoid the need for permanent teeth
extractions, and correct oral habits such as thumb-sucking.
In other words, early orthodontic treatment can,
many times, simplify future orthodontic treatment.
